Dog Control Public Space Protection Order

Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) are the main enforcement tool used by the council where dog control is concerned, helping to prevent and tackle issues around dog fouling and irresponsible dog ownership.

The council is consulting on its proposal to extend its current dog control PSPO from May 2021 until May 2024.

The PSPO sets out the areas where dogs must be kept on a lead and areas where dogs are not allowed, and what time of year these restrictions apply, as well as the requirement for people to pick up their dog mess. Full details are listed here.

The council is not proposing any changes to the activity, locations or times covered by the PSPO. Currently the only proposal is to continue the restrictions for a further three years. However, if you think there should be other changes, do please let us know and these will be considered by committee when the new arrangements are agreed.

One of the most substantial suggestions we have received so far is that we add that dogs should be made to stay on their leads in an area close to Long Rock which is shown on the map below. We’d be particularly interested to hear your thoughts on this suggestion.

This has been suggested as Long Rock is a RAMSAR international wildlife site. A RAMSAR site is the land listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (the Ramsar Convention) 1973.

We have also received reports of instances of dogs not on leads chasing and, in some cases, injuring protected bird and animal species.
