The city council’s usual suspension of garden waste collections will be happening again this winter.
The last collection will take place on Tuesday 24 December. Collections will then resume on Monday 2 March 2020.
For those unaware of the reason, the suspension is put in place to provide greater resilience across the waste collection service as a whole. Initially it allows the crews to catch up from the Christmas period when the amount of recycling and residual waste is much higher.
Then later in January and into February, it will provide a better recycling and residual waste service at a time of year when the weather often causes problems. This will be especially important if there is snow – catching up will be much easier.
The council understands that some people continue to generate garden waste over winter, and apologises to those who are affected by the suspension of the service. However, the lorries drive around comparatively empty, and this is not a good use of staff or vehicle resources, or good for the environment.
The usual real Christmas tree collection will continue. Dates are available at www.canterbury.gov.uk/dates.
Weekly food waste collections will also continue throughout January and February.
