One of the world’s most prestigious photography awards returns to The Beaney this month (July).

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition, which is organised by the National Portrait Gallery, celebrates and promotes the very best in contemporary portrait photography from around the world.

This year’s exhibition features more than 50 images from the 2018 competition, which attracted thousands of entries from some of the most talented young photographers, established professionals, photography students and gifted amateurs in the world.

The top prize of £15,000 was won by Alice Mann for her All-Female Drum Majorette Series.

The exhibition features a diverse range of images which tell the fascinating stories behind the creation of the works, from formal commissioned portraits to more spontaneous and intimate moments capturing friends and family. The images explore both traditional and contemporary approaches to the photographic portrait whilst capturing a range of characters, moods and locations.

Chairman of Canterbury City Council’s Community Committee, Cllr Neil Baker, said: “The Beaney has welcomed this fantastic exhibition a number of times over the last few years and every time it just gets better and better.

“We’re expecting much of the same this year and are looking forward to welcoming residents and visitors to The Beaney to enjoy this fantastic celebration of photography.”

The prize-winning works will be on display at The Beaney’s Special Exhibitions Gallery from 6 July to 6 October 2019. Admission is free.
