Work starts on foundations for Aphra Behn statue

Work has started on the foundations for the new Aphra Behn statue outside the Beaney in Canterbury, which will formally be unveiled early next year.

This stage of the process will last up to two weeks and a small area of the high street has been fenced off during the work.

Aphra Behn, who was born in Canterbury, was the first professional woman writer in the English language and the imminent statue recognises her incredible contribution to the literary world.

The Beaney was chosen as the location for it to highlight the link to the city’s literary heritage and celebrate our ongoing commitment to sharing our rich cultural heritage and supporting access to learning.

The work on the foundations is funded by government as a part of the Connected Canterbury project.

Access to the Beaney remains available via the accessible entrance on Best Lane.
