St George’s Clocktower work up and running

Work on our latest Connected Canterbury project to revamp the area around St George’s Clocktower in Canterbury is underway.
Using government money, we are transforming a number of the city’s public spaces to reflect its heritage status as an international visitor destination and World Heritage Site.
At the clocktower, the surface will be levelled and the steps down into the tower removed. Glass panels will close off the arches to create a small exhibition space inside the tower for a sculpture or artwork.
The windows and the clock face will be illuminated and uplights to the outside will be installed.
On the Fenwick’s side, the pavement will be repaired and cleaned and three trees will be planted in line with the pillars of the Fenwick building to frame the windows.
Welcome information, maps and directional signs will be added.
On the clocktower square, the york stone paving will be repaired and relaid. The extent of St George’s Church and location of the pews will be shown by engraving in the paving.
The project will take place in two phases – now to mid-November, and then January to February 2026, to avoid the busy Christmas period.
As with many of the exciting schemes that are currently happening around the city, there may be some disruption during this work, but every effort will be made to keep this to an absolute minimum.
