Letting in the light at Curtis Wood

Over the last few months we have held two public engagement sessions about the future management of Curtis Wood in Herne.
These have been positive and well attended by the local community, and now we are in a position to confirm details of some upcoming work that will allow more light to reach the woodland floor, creating better conditions for woodland flowers to establish and spread.
Starting on Tuesday 7 October and taking place every Tuesday until 9 December, we will be thinning trees throughout the wood.
Each Tuesday, a limited part of the wood will be cordoned off to prevent access for everyone’s safety.
Felling what will ultimately only be a small proportion of the total number of trees – approximately 10 per cent of the total – will result in greater light coming through and in woodland flower growth that supports a wide range of insects, birds and small mammals.
We were really pleased with the level of public interest in our plans for how we intend to care for Curtis Wood in the years to come.
In line with views expressed by local people, the overall approach in our management plan is to take small steps that will enhance the site for biodiversity and wildlife.
Signs will be going up at Curtis Wood ahead of the work starting to let residents and visitors know what’s happening.
