Partial reopening of Longport car park

We’re pleased to say Longport car park has partially reopened after being closed for improvement work since the summer as part of our Levelling Up Fund project, paid for by the UK government.
Although a small number of parking bays remain unavailable, and there is some outstanding work still to do on this project that will require a further closure – see below – we wanted to get it back open for a while to help those who need to park in this area, rather than leaving a usable car park completely closed.
As a reminder, the Longport scheme is all about making an understated car park next to a World Heritage Site more in keeping with its location and environment.
It has included:
- a redesigned layout that aims to create a greener, more welcoming setting
- improving the pedestrian entrances at Ivy Lane and Longport
- a new widened footpath along the back edge of the car park between Longport and Ivy Lane
- redesigned pavements around the car park perimeter using new paving and kerbs
- resurfacing and relining the car park
- new planting beds around the car park perimeter, new tree planters and new railings
The remaining work to do is:
- new cycle stands and cycle storage lockers
- welcome information, maps and signs for visitors
- a new hedge, trees and planting beds around the entrance and perimeter
- three trees and small planting beds within the car park
- a new planting bed along the back edge of the car park
The planting work needs to wait until the end of October when it’s less hot and dry for the new plants.
We are likely to need to put another full closure in place for around two weeks for this. Exact dates will follow as soon as we know more.
The cycle stands, lockers and welcome information will be installed after Christmas by separate contractors.
This will happen across several sites at the same time, rather than adding them one by one as each site is completed.
