Council secures White Ribbon accreditation

Today (Tuesday 25 November) we could not be prouder to announce we have been accredited by White Ribbon, the leading charity in engaging men and boys to end violence against women and girls.

It’s apt because today is White Ribbon Day and we are encouraging everyone living, working and studying in the district to sign up as a White Ribbon ambassador if you are a man, a champion if you are a woman or to simply make the White Ribbon promise.

Lots of our staff have already become White Ribbon ambassadors and have pledged to:

  • actively reflect on our own behaviours, beliefs and actions
  • educate ourselves about what violence is, its root causes and the effect it has on equality
  • challenge unacceptable behaviour
  • look positively to influence other men and boys

White Ribbon champions are women who ensure women’s voices and the voices of all those affected by gender-based violence are heard.

The promise says: “I promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women.”

The decision to apply for White Ribbon accreditation was made unanimously by councillors at October’s meeting of Full Council.

Work now begins on a six-month action plan to support our accreditation.
