Artist sought for East Cliff public artwork

Canterbury City Council is inviting artists to create a major new public artwork for the East Cliff sea wall in Herne Bay, along the King Charles III coastal path.

The project will refresh existing informal artwork with a high-quality, permanent piece that better reflects the identity of Herne Bay and its seafront environment.

A strong emphasis is placed on community engagement, with artists required to demonstrate how they will involve local people.

The project aims to:

  • Increase footfall to the eastern end of Herne Bay seafront
  • Enhance the visitor experience through a visually engaging design
  • Celebrate local identity and community
  • Support the vision of the Herne Bay Town Centre Strategy

Artists are encouraged to draw inspiration from local voices, including promenade users, schools, youth groups and community organisations.

The total commission value is £12,000, covering artist fees, materials, community engagement and installation, and is fully paid for using money from the United Kingdom Shared Prosperity Fund.

Cabinet member for culture, Cllr Charlotte Cornell, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for an artist to create a stunning piece of art in a busy and popular location in Herne Bay.

“We are looking for someone who can work closely with local people to design and install something truly special that reflects the town and its residents.

“If that sounds like you, then please get in touch. We can’t wait to see all the wonderful ideas that come in.”

The deadline for applications is Monday 29 June. Installation is scheduled to start on 17 August with completion during week commencing 7 September.

Applications should be emailed to externaldevelopment@canterbury.gov.uk and more information is available in the artist brief.
