Phase two of cycle storage project brings total spaces to 79

The second and final phase of a major expansion of cycle storage facilities in the city centre is now complete.

Last October, the city council opened 31 storage spaces in five locations, with a promise of more to follow in 2026.

The new sites in phase two are as follows:

  • Watling Street: 12 vertical lockers
  • St Radigund’s Street: three lockers and three bike hubs
  • Longport car park: three lockers and four bike hubs
  • Castle Row car park: three lockers and four bike hubs
  • Burgate Lane: six lockers
  • Iron Bar Lane: five lockers and five bike hubs

It brings the total number of bike storage spaces under the project to 79.

Both short term and long term rentals are available – the lockers for long stay and the hubs for short stay – with different prices and booking procedures in place depending on the use required.

For short term rentals customers should download the Bike Hubs app. For long term rentals, go to the Bikeaway website.

The project is part of the council’s Connected Canterbury initiative, paid for using UK government funding.

Cabinet member for transport, Cllr Mel Dawkins, said: “It’s great to get this project completed and we are very pleased with the results. It represents the biggest investment in secure, high quality cycle storage facilities the city has ever seen.

“Many people want to cycle but worry about whether their bike will be secure when they leave it, so these storage spaces are the ideal solution to ease those concerns.

“They are easy to use with locations spread across the city centre and offer good value, whether it’s just for a few hours or on a long-term basis.

“Cycling is an environmentally-friendly and healthy way to get about and we hope this will encourage more people to get out of their cars and onto their bikes.”
