Proposed changes to charges and conditions in council car parks

The council is proposing to make a number of changes to its car parks to encourage greater use of car parks that have spare capacity, help tackle the climate emergency and increase income to help pay for vital council services.

The changes being proposed are shown below:


Canterbury

Proposed to take effect from April 2022:

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £2.80 to £3.20 in Watling Street and Queningate

  • Introduce a minimum charge of two hours on Saturdays in Watling Street and Queningate, to match Whitefriars

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £2.30 to £2.50 in Whitefriars

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £2.30 to £2.50 in Pound Lane, St Radigunds, North Lane, Northgate, Castle Row, Millers Field, Longport, Rosemary Lane and Riverside

  • Keep the current hourly tariff of £1.80 in Castle Street multi-storey car park, Holmans Meadow and Station Road West multi-storey car park

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £1.10 to £1.20 in Cow Lane and Maynard Road and change these car parks from Pay and Display to RingGo only

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £1.50 to £1.60 in Toddlers Cove (with the first 30 minutes free) and change this car park from Pay and Display to RingGo only

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £1.50 to £1.60 in Victoria recreation ground (with the first two hours free) and change this car park from Pay and Display to RingGo only

  • Allow accommodation permits to be used in Whitefriars car park

  • Increase the cost of all off-street parking permits by 9%

Proposed to take effect from April 2023:

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £3.20 to £3.50 in Watling Street and Queningate

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £1.20 to £1.30 in Cow Lane and Maynard Road

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £1.60 to £1.70 in Toddlers Cove

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £1.60 to £1.70 in Victoria recreation ground


Herne Bay

Proposed to take effect from April 2022:

  • Increase the hourly tariff in Neptune, Reculver Towers and Reculver Country Park from £1.80 to £2.10 between April and September and from £1.40 to £1.50 between October and March

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £1.40 to £1.50 in William Street, Market Street and Beach Street

  • Introduce seasonal charging in the Bishopstone Lane informal parking area between April and September, 10am to 4pm. The charge would be £1.50 per day Monday to Friday and £3.00 per day at weekends and bank holidays, RingGo only

  • Increase the cost of all Herne Bay off-street parking permits by 7%

Proposed to take effect from April 2023:

  • Increase the hourly tariff in Neptune, Reculver Towers and Reculver Country Park from £2.10 to £2.30 between April and September


Whitstable

Proposed to take effect from April 2022:

  • Increase the hourly tariff in Gorrell Tank and Keams Yard from £2.50 to £2.80 between April and September and from £1.50 to £1.60 between October and March

  • Increase the hourly tariff in Middle Wall, Gladstone Road, Shaftesbury Road and Victoria Street from £2.10 to £2.30 between April and September and from £1.50 to £1.60 between October and March

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £2.10 to £2.30 in Beach Walk, Oyster and Whitstable Harbour

  • Increase the hourly tariff from 60p to 80p in Tankerton Road and change this car park from Pay and Display to RingGo only

  • Introduce seasonal charging in the new Gorrell Valley Nature Reserve car park between April and September, 10am to 4pm. The charge would be £1.50 per day Monday to Friday and £3.00 per day at weekends and bank holidays, RingGo only

  • Introduce seasonal charging in the Faversham Road informal parking area between April and September, 10am to 4pm. The charge would be £1.50 per day Monday to Friday and £3.00 per day at weekends and bank holidays, RingGo only

  • Increase the cost of all Whitstable off-street parking permits by 7%

  • Create a Gorrell Valley Nature Reserve allotment permit at a cost of £40 per year

Proposed to take effect from April 2023:

  • Increase the hourly tariff in Gorrell Tank and Keams Yard from £2.80 to £3.10 between April and September

  • Increase the hourly tariff in Middle Wall, Gladstone Road, Shaftesbury Road and Victoria Street from £2.30 to £2.50 between April and September

  • Increase the hourly tariff from £2.30 to £2.50 in Beach Walk, Oyster and Whitstable Harbour

  • Increase the hourly tariff from 80p to £1.00 in Tankerton Road


District-wide

Proposed to take effect from April 2022:

  • Remove the minimum charge of one hour in ANPR car parks (Canterbury Band 3, William Street in Herne Bay and Middle Wall in Whitstable)

  • Increase the cost of accommodation permits by £1

  • Create a residents’ electric vehicle overnight off-street permit at a cost of £100 per year

  • Allow £25,000 a year for parking discounts and incentives

Proposed to take effect from April 2023:

  • Increase the cost of accommodation permits by £1
