Draft Canterbury District Local Plan – focused consultation

The council’s Cabinet has approved a further round of consultation on the new Local Plan, which is open from Tuesday 9 September to Tuesday 21 October 2025.

Under the new National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), the government has set the district a target of 1,215 new homes being built every year until 2042/2043.

This consultation, under what is known as Regulation 18, is focused solely on:

  • changes to some of the draft strategic site allocations
  • a number of new site allocations
  • Gypsy and Traveller draft policies and allocations
  • what other changes to the NPPF mean for our district

You can read the consultation documents and background evidence.

Hard copies of the consultation documents are available to read, but not take away, at:

  • Canterbury City Council Offices, 14 Rose Lane, Canterbury, CT1 2UR (Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm)
  • Whitstable Library, 31 Oxford Street, Whitstable, CT5 1DB (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 10am to 5pm; Thursday, 10am to 6pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 4pm)
  • Herne Bay Library, 124 High Street, Herne Bay, CT6 5JY (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 10am to 5pm; Thursday, 10am to 6pm; Saturday, 10am to 4pm).

We are not consulting on the whole draft Local Plan all over again.

Every single one of the comments received during the previous consultations will be taken into account as we prepare the final draft version of the Local Plan – known as Regulation 19 – early next year.

All previous comments will also be forwarded to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government who will appoint a planning inspector.

They will then hold a public inquiry, known as an Examination in Public, into the draft plan.
