Parish election timing

At the moment, we are carrying out a review which may make changes to parish and town councils in the area.

Any substantial changes from that review can only take place when there are scheduled parish and town council elections.

This means substantial changes to parish wards or to parish boundaries and the creation of any new parish or town councils can only take place when there are scheduled elections taking place.

The next scheduled elections are May 2027. The review is due to complete in March 2027.

There is insufficient time after the review ends in March for any changes to be introduced before elections in May 2027.

Substantial changes would then not take effect until May 2031 at the earliest.

Canterbury City Council is therefore proposing to defer the scheduled parish elections from May 2027 to May 2028.

No decisions have been made. We would like to hear your views before councillors consider the proposal.
