Residents’ parking in New Town Street, Canterbury

Have your say graphic

The council has been asked to look at changes in New Town Street because some residents are finding that the number of non-residents parking in the road is making it difficult to find a parking space.

In other parts of the city parking is limited to two hours paid parking and this is what is now being proposed in New Town Street.

Parking for non-permit holders would be limited to two hours. A charge of £2.40 per hour would apply, with a minimum charge of 60p.

Permits currently cost £63 per year and this would increase to £86 per year. The cost of visitor permits would remain at £5 per day.

These parking controls operate in different ways in different parts of the city. In some areas the charges and time limit apply Monday to Friday and in others six or seven days a week. They also apply between 8am and 6.30pm or in some areas 24 hours a day.

The proposed changes won’t be implemented unless a significant proportion of residents are in favour of the change. If the results show a high enough level of support we will then need to go through the legal process of making the necessary changes to the parking restrictions.
