Annual check of the electoral register underway

The city council’s annual check of the electoral register, to make sure it is correct and complete and people are eligible to vote, begins today (Friday 12 August).

With the full election for the city council taking place on 4 May 2023, it is important that everyone who is allowed to cast their vote is on the register.

Over the next two months, all households will be contacted by the council, either by letter or by email if electronic contact details have been provided.

Residents are urged to read this communication carefully to see whether they are required to respond. This will depend on whether the council has been able to match details of everyone who can vote to national and local records, and whether there are new people in the household who need to be added to the register.

Full details about how the annual canvass works are on the council’s website. Residents with any questions can contact the Elections team at electoral.services@canterbury.gov.uk or call 01227 862007.

The council’s Head of Paid Service and Returning Officer, Tricia Marshall, said: “We have our election coming up next spring and it is possible a general election could be called at any time, so it’s essential people make sure they are on the register and are eligible to cast their vote when the time comes.

“If you do need to respond to us when your letter or email arrives, we would ask you to do so online – the details will be provided – which helps us to keep our costs as low as possible.”
