Prize draw for Jubilee street parties and picnics
Community and voluntary groups that hold a street party or picnic to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee could be in line to win a £70 Sainsbury’s food voucher to help their event happen in style.
The city council has set up a prize draw to offer the vouchers to 70 local groups. All street parties and picnics need to be registered with the council by Sunday 1 May and must be taking place in a public place between Thursday 2 and Sunday 5 June, which is the long Jubilee weekend.
Events can be registered on the council’s website. From all those submitted, 70 will then be chosen at random to win the voucher. Successful groups will be informed by Sunday 15 May. Applications cannot be accepted for events taking place on private property or from commercial organisers.
The council has also published detailed information on its website to give people tips and advice on running successful community Jubilee events. One crucial date to remember is the deadline of Thursday 31 March to apply to Kent County Council for a road closure for a street party in a side road or cul-de-sac.
Lead councillor for community support, Cllr Joe Howes, said: “The whole country will be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this summer and we want to make sure our local community events are the very best they can be.
“A food voucher of £70 for 70 groups to mark 70 years on the throne will help organisers put on a fantastic bash in their neighbourhoods. We hope lots of groups will come forward to let us know about their picnic or street party and make it a long weekend to remember.”
