Conference to tackle every parent’s worst nightmare

A free event for parents to help spot the signs of their children being exploited by drugs gangs, being radicalised or being targeted by sexual abusers will be held in Canterbury.

The Parent Awareness Conference, which has been organised by Canterbury City Council’s Community Safety Unit, includes speakers from Crimestoppers, the University of Kent’s Child Protection department and Kent County Council’s Prevent team.

Attendees will also have the chance to speak with key youth support agencies like Rising Sun and Addaction. 

Chairman of the council’s Community Committee, Cllr Neil Baker, said: “The thought of any child being exploited is every parent’s worst nightmare, and it’s down to all of us to use events like this one to help us understand the signs and stop it from happening.

“We’d urge parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers and anyone else who looks after children to book their free ticket, listen to the experts and gain the knowledge to make a difference when it really matters.”

The conference is being held on 18 March 2020 in the Sibson Atrium at the University of Kent. Anyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided.
