Herne Bay flytipping incident leads to £1,000 fine

On 19 January this year, residents of Little Charles Street in Herne Bay woke up to this pile of rubbish that had been dumped overnight.

You might remember the pictures that quickly appeared in local Facebook groups.

Our environmental crime officers investigated, including viewing CCTV images and going through the rubbish for information.

As a result of this, one individual was formally interviewed for a flytipping offence under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and admitted the offence.

They received a £1,000 fine in the form of a fixed penalty notice, which has since been paid in full.

The waste itself was quickly removed, and did not cause any long term impact on residents and businesses.

Cabinet member for enforcement, Cllr Connie Nolan, said: “This is an excellent outcome – an investigation leading to a result in less than a month. Well done to our officers.

“It sends a clear message to people thinking of dumping their waste – don’t bother. We will investigate and there will be consequences if we find out who you are.”
