Big expansion of city centre cycle storage

New bicycle storage facilities in Canterbury are now available to use.

In a major expansion of bike storage, the city council has installed a mix of vertical lockers, bike hubs and bike hangars across five locations, with more to follow in phase two of the project in the coming months.

For now, though, the new facilities can be found as follows:

  • Orange Street car park – six vertical lockers (top picture)
  • Station Road West – three bike hubs and two bike hangars (below)
  • North Lane car park – five bike hubs
  • Millers Field car park – six bike hubs
  • Canterbury bus station – seven bike hubs

Both short term and long term rentals are available with different prices and booking procedures in place depending on the use required.

For short term rentals – classed as between 15 minutes and two weeks – customers should go to the Bike Hubs website. The website explains the prices, shows how to download the locker app, provides videos on how to use the lockers and answers key questions users may have.

For long term rentals, ideal for regular commuters or residents looking to store their bike for longer periods or a fixed term, people should go to the Bikeaway website to apply for a key operated unit.

Long term rentals cost £12 a month or £120 for a full year, bringing the cost down to £10 a month.

The project is part of the council’s Connected Canterbury initiative, paid for using UK government funding.

Cabinet member for transport, Cllr Alex Ricketts, said: “We are really pleased to get these storage facilities up and running. Cyclists can be confident that their bike will be safe and stay clean and dry when they make their way into and around the city on two wheels.

“It’s really important we offer people a mix of ways to travel into Canterbury, both on transport and environmental grounds.

“It may well be the case that some have been put off from doing so because of concerns about the security of their bike, so we hope this new scheme will give cyclists the peace of mind that all will be well when they return to it.”

In phase two, further storage facilities will open at Watling Street car park, Iron Bar Lane, Castle Row car park, St Radigund’s car park and Longport car park.

These are dependent on the completion of other Connected Canterbury-related projects. Information will follow on these in due course.
