Canterbury’s new e-bike hire scheme hits the streets

Canterbury’s new e-bike hire scheme is up and running, offering residents and visitors access to affordable and convenient cycling facilities across the whole city.

The city council has joined forces with leading national micromobility company Beryl Bikes to launch the project. It is the first scheme of its kind in Kent and is being funded by a combination of government Levelling Up funding and developer contributions.

Beryl has a fleet of 100 e-bikes available, with bike parking bays in several locations and more to follow in the coming weeks.

The sites in this first phase of the roll out include Burgate, The Riverside, The Beaney and St Radigund’s Street, with locations set to be added including Wincheap, Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Hales Place and Longport.

Beryl offers two different pay options – either pay as you go or pre-bought bundles. Users register for ‘Canterbury Beryl Bikes’ via the Beryl app, which has full details of the locations and prices.

The scheme uses Segway B200 e-bikes with the latest safety and security technology, including both physical, stem-mounted locks and an integrated hub-lock that is disabled via the Beryl app to end a ride.

Users start and end their rides at one of Beryl’s designated geofenced stations, providing ready access and convenience.

Cabinet member for transport, Cllr Alex Ricketts, said: “I am delighted that we’ve launched this scheme. It’s an idea that people have suggested to me on a regular basis, and these particular bikes will really help to link up different parts of the city for locals and visitors alike.

“Having tried them for myself, I have to say they are absolutely superb. And the initiative offers a more active and enjoyable form of transport, with the added benefit of reducing traffic congestion and reliance on the car.

“We welcome such an experienced company as Beryl to the city and look forward to working with them to make this scheme a success.”

Beryl CEO, Phil Ellis, added: “Whether you are a commuter, student, or tourist, these e-bikes are the perfect way to travel and explore Canterbury. It is fantastic to see the adoption of more sustainable and accessible transport options in this amazing city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“We are pleased to be working with Canterbury City Council on a long-term agreement, with an optional extension, securing a micromobility future for residents and visitors.”
