Free social tennis at West Beach

Free social tennis sessions will soon be coming to the courts at West Beach in Whitstable.

The city council, which owns the courts, and its operator Infinity Tennis are kicking off the scheme on Saturday 27 September between 10am and 11am. It will then run fortnightly after that, with the next one on Saturday 11 October and so on from there, at the same times.

The initiative is all about having fun, meeting new people and enjoying the sport in a relaxed and supportive environment, regardless of tennis ability.

Sessions are open to all ages and organisers are particularly keen to welcome people with learning disabilities who are keen to play the game.

Rackets and other equipment will be provided for those people who are new to the sport.

The council’s Cabinet member for open spaces, Cllr Mel Dawkins, said: “Last year, we refurbished the five tennis courts at West Beach and they really are in fantastic condition. You couldn’t wish for a nicer location to play and learn the game than right there on the seafront.

“Following the selection of Infinity Tennis to run the courts at the start of this year, we promised to bring in free community sessions and I am delighted these are about to get up and running.

“Hopefully they will prove to be very popular and inspire a whole new generation to take up the sport.”

Founder of Infinity Tennis, Gavid Vickers, said: “It doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a racket before or if you’re looking to brush up on your skills.

“Infinity Tennis Coach Tom will guide you through fun games and exercises, helping you improve your game while you enjoy meeting new people. All you need to do is show up and get involved, and we look forward to seeing you on the court!”

No booking is needed to join these sessions, but Infinity Tennis would encourage people who are intending to come along to register their interest on the LTA’s website to help get an indication of the likely numbers attending.
