Planning application submitted to transform section of Herne Bay seafront

Canterbury City Council has submitted a planning application for new homes and a commercial unit that would transform a section of Herne Bay seafront if approved.

The application for 73-74 Central Parade is for a single block of six apartments over four floors. Four of the apartments would have two bedrooms, with the other two having three bedrooms. They would be 100 per cent accessible and adaptable.

The commercial space on the ground floor is described as “generous provision…which benefits from sea views”.

If granted, the completed scheme would meet the council’s aims of restoring the historic frontage of this section of Central Parade, which was formerly the Tivoli arcade.

Planning documents submitted for the application state the scheme has been designed sensitively to complement the historic clocktower on the promenade opposite and would provide “an interesting new architectural addition to the street”.

And as part of the project, the facade of 74 Central Parade would be reinstated to help preserve the character of the area.

The planning application is available to view on the council’s website with the reference number CA/25/01844.

This application relates to phase one of the council’s plans for the Beach Street/Central Parade area of Herne Bay.

Phase one prioritises the element along Central Parade to improve the frontage along the seafront.

Phase two is for the development of the car park areas in Beach Street, behind the application area covered in phase one. Council officers are working on plans for phase two, which is reliant on external funding, at the moment.

The phased approach improves the overall viability of what the council is seeking to achieve with the regeneration of this area of the town.
