Wildflower meadow set for a cut as anticipation grows for 2027 display

We were blown away by the response to the city wall wildflower planting in the spring – not a day seemed to pass by without more pictures appearing somewhere online!

Thank you to everybody who took the time to take a photo, send us a message or email in a compliment. Each one was sincerely appreciated.

With the ongoing hot and dry spell and Mother Nature not offering up any wet stuff, it was inevitable that it would eventually start to look past its best, and we’ve now reached that point.

Following careful consideration of the options to ensure we get the best possible wildflower display again next spring and summer, we will be carrying out a cut of the meadow. This is being scheduled in at the moment.

This is about getting the right balance between ecological needs, how we want it to look next year, its appearance now in such a high profile location and the fire risk associated with these excessively parched conditions.

The last thing we want is for someone to chuck a cigarette end out of a car window and for a very damaging fire to ruin everything that has happened here.

As to what happens next year, of course nature will do what nature does, but we do expect to see those perennials coming through nicely.

The joy is as much in the anticipation as anything else!
