New children’s play area opens in the Dane John Gardens

An all new children’s play area has opened in the Dane John Gardens, providing a range of imaginative and inclusive play equipment for children aged up to seven years old.

Given the park’s status as a Scheduled Monument, we worked with both Historic England and Canterbury Archaeological Trust to ensure the design of the play area was in harmony with its historic setting and that underground archaeology was protected.

Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Cllr Jean Butcher, was joined by guests for the official opening earlier this week.

She told those present: “I’m delighted to be here today to officially open this fantastic new children’s play area in the wonderful setting of the Dane John Gardens.

“The play area, funded by Canterbury City Council, has been thoughtfully designed to provide a range of equipment while also reflecting the rich heritage of the gardens.

“I hope that it is enjoyed by families and proves to be a great addition to the park.”

The play area was designed by Jupiter Play and cost £150,000.

Although the equipment is open, there is still some work required on the grassed areas, which will be carried out when drier weather comes along in the spring.
