Start date set for multi-storey construction

Work to build Canterbury’s new multi-storey car park in Station Road West will start on Monday 4 March.

The £9.1 million car park will have 380 spaces across three levels and is being built on the site of the existing city council car park next to the railway station.

It will operate using the very latest automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera and barrier technology and will initially provide 20 electric vehicle parking spaces, with more planned for the future.

On the ground floor, in addition to dedicated spaces for blue badge holders and parents with young children, there will be bookable bays that can be reserved through an online parking account linked to ANPR.

Construction is expected to take around a year. During this time, the council’s temporary car park further along Station Road West near to The Spires, which has 112 spaces, will be available.

Motorists are advised to leave more time to find a parking space, especially if they are planning to catch a specific train. The closest car parks to the temporary site are North Lane, St Radigund’s and Miller’s Field, or there you can see a full list of Canterbury car parks

Chairman of the council’s Regeneration and Property Committee, Cllr Ben Fitter-Harding, said: “Our investment in this car park will provide parking capacity for this area of Canterbury for decades to come and help smaller, independent traders in St Dunstan’s.

“It is also much-needed new infrastructure to support an expanding city, with thousands of new homes and an increase in high-speed rail services both in the pipeline, and helps us deliver our vision for an improved integrated transport hub at Canterbury West railway station with our partners.

“With such a major building project, there will inevitably be some disruption, but every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum.”
