Council launches artist call-out to transform Whitstable Harbour’s South Quay Shed

The entrance to South Quay Shed

Canterbury City Council is looking for an artist or artist collective to transform the wall spaces at South Quay Shed in Whitstable Harbour.

This public art commission offers an opportunity to create vibrant wall art that reflects the unique historical and cultural context of the site to inspire and engage visitors.

The artist will need to be open to collaborating with the community that uses the space and the council is particularly keen to hear from artists living, working or studying locally in East Kent.

Cllr Chris Cornell, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Inclusion and Coastal Towns Champion, said “Whitstable is jam-packed full of artists and this is a great opportunity for them to make their mark on the new South Quay Shed.

“We look forward to finding something that can take its place in the rich gallery that is Whitstable’s public art scene.”

The chosen artist will receive £3,000 to cover the artist’s fee, community meetings, materials, and installation.

Applications close at midnight on Monday 10 June 2024.
